Getting an EV charging point installed at home

In todays market, you can’t help but notice nearly every car manufacturer are entering the EV market with several models coming out, or already on the streets now. The demand is only getting stronger as the government and car manufacturers promote Electric cars. This results in a high demand of people wanting to charge their vehicles at home, so let’s explore the options. A three pin plug can be used to charge your vehicle up but this is slow. The Wall mounted box can turbo the charging speed.

Wallbox charger

A Wallbox charger delivers a fast rate of charge and is safer to use than a 3 pin plug in. Many of these chargers have safety features to prevent any overload happening to the home’s electricity. The Wallbox is installed on an external wall outside your house or garage. Connected to the mains electricity by a secure connection, it’ll be ideally located close to where you park in order to keep resources close. If you park in the street, that may become a problem as you can’t run cables across the pavement.

The cost to install at your home.

The good news is, there’s a government grant to help with the costs of instalment. This will still cost the individual £279.99 to be fitted properly by a qualified tech. there will be additional costs if the box is to be fitted in abnormal places. To enable you to get this grant you will have the usual paperwork required to prove to the government you’re the owner of the vehicle. The Wallbox should take approximately 3 hours to install, depending on its location.

Cost of charging my EV

This all depends on the size of the vehicles batteries; how much charge is currently in your battery and what rate you want to charge at. Here is an example; the typical rate for electricity is 14p per kWh, or 8p per kWh for overnight, economy charging. The average EV, with a 60kWh battery and around 200 miles worth of range, it’ll cost around £8.40 to charge fully. A bigger vehicle, like a Tesla Model S, will cost around £14 but this has a much greater range at around 300 miles.

Time to charge EV

Charging time is an area where having a wallbox really helps. Having one fitted gives you a charging rate of between 3.7kW and 7kW, this results in 15-30 miles of charge added per hour. This remains at a steady speed, but it’s better than a three-pin charger, which can only deliver 2.3kW of power which is around eight miles of range per hour.
